External evaluators assess Livestock and Fish smallholder pig value chain projects in Uganda

An external evaluation team recently assessed the Smallholder Pig Value Chain Project activities in Uganda. The evaluation sought to review the effectiveness of the program in developing, supporting and implementing the value chain approach at its research for development (R4D) sites and to assess the relevance and efficiency of the program’s value chain approach with a focus on quality of science. Pig value chains assessment results shared with Uganda local leaders and farmers

The Uganda Smallholder Pig Value Chains Development (SPVCD) project held three feedback workshops in November 2013 to train facilitators and to disseminate results of the value chain assessment conducted in three districts (Kamuli, Masaka and Mukono). The aim of the assessment was to characterize the pig production and marketing systems, identify constraints and opportunities faced by different actors of the value chain, select potential interventions for pilot testing and identify key elements and variables to consider for benchmarking surveys. Uganda pig value chain actors to benefit from training modules on pig health, feeds, breeds and business development

The Smallholder Pig Value Chain Development (SPVCD) project in Uganda recently held a writeshop to prepare eight training modules on pig health, feeding, breeding and economics (business management, enterprise development and finance). The modules will be used to deliver appropriate training interventions to service provider organizations, farmers and other actors of the value chain in Uganda. Continue reading

Smallholder pig production systems in Uganda: constraints and opportunities for engaging with market systems

At the recent International Conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, Emily Ouma presented some Uganda pig value chain project results in the form of a poster. The poster “Characterization of smallholder pig production systems in Uganda: constraints and opportunities for engaging with market systems” was given a ‘best poster award’ during the conference … Continue reading

Documenting disease prevalence in the Uganda pig value chain

A disease prevalence survey in Uganda’s Masaka, Mukono and Kamuli districts was recently undertaken by a team of ILRI researchers and postgraduate students from Makerere University. Led by Michel Dione, a post-doctoral fellow with the Smallholder Pig Value Chains Development (SPVCD) project, the activity contributes to the joint efforts of the SPVCD and Safe Food … Continue reading

Assessing roles, constraints and opportunities to improve the Uganda pig value chain

The Uganda Smallholder Pig Value Chain Development (SPVCD) project just completed an assessment of the roles, constraints and opportunities to improve the pig value chain in Masaka, Mukono and Kamuli districts. The activity was led by ILRI’s Emily Ouma in close collaboration with partners at district level, Lawrence Mayega and David Kiryabwire, and their teams … Continue reading

Uganda farmer explains smallholder pig value chain priorities

In recent months, Livestock and Fish value chain assessment activities have been carried out in Masaka district as part of the Uganda Smallholder Pig Value Chains Development (SPVCD) and Safe Food, Fair Food (SFFF) projects. On 22 April 2013, Pastor Lukwago, one of the farmers approached by the project team, was unfortunately unavailable to meet … Continue reading

Defining best-bet interventions for the Uganda smallholder pig value chain

The Livestock and Fish team working on the smallholder pig value chain in Uganda recently held a workshop to identify potential best-bet interventions based on the value chain assessment work. Best-bets are interventions which better fit the prevailing conditions (constraints and opportunities) under which farmers and other value chain actors operate and have more chance … Continue reading
