In late 2016, the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish produced several synthesis products, including a series of briefs on ex-ante environment impact assessment work carried out between 2012 and 2016. One of the approaches was to develop the CLEANED (Comprehensive Livestock Environmental Assessment for Improved Nutrition, a Secured Environment and Sustainable Development along Livestock and Fish Value Chains) tool to help users explore and assess the multiple environmental impacts of intensifying livestock value chains in developing countries.

In a series of workshops, industry stakeholders in Tanzania recently gathered to map the location of dairy farming systems, prominent farms, dairy industry infrastructure and natural resources. Stakeholders then worked through scenarios of how the industry could develop over a 10 year time horizon – mapping the associated changes.
A ‘Rapid appraisal of dairy value chains in Morogoro and Tanga regions in Tanzania’, conducted across eight villages in Kilosa and Mvomero districts in Morogoro and in Mvomero and Lushoto districts in Tanga, has identified key entry points for beginning to address the constraints in the country’s dairy sector.
In March, a CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish phase 2 planning workshop was conducted through a two part process. Initially conceived as a single event, it was rendered into an online format that operated across wide ranging time zones.

The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has just approved a small grant to the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) for a project entitled the ‘potential farm to landscape impact and adoption of forage technologies in smallholder dairy production systems in Tanzania.’
For the past year, researchers from the International Livestock Research Institute, other research institutes and national partners have been working on a framework to carry out a ‘Comprehensive Livestock Environment Assessment for Improved Nutrition, a Secured Environment and Sustainable Development along Livestock Value Chains.’ On 30 and 31 October, the project team met in Kenya to review progress and the state of the framework.
